Audacious, vivacious and loquacious, Carol Premacio's greatest loves are, and always…
Who says learning should stop when we’re done with college? The world is an amazing place, and there’s just so many things that we could learn every day. You might want to hone your skills, a certain aspect of yourself, or just learn something new. Want to try out short courses? We say, go for it! Here are eight good reasons why:
1. It will give you an edge at work.
Trainings and workshops are integral in organization. Companies do this to ensure that their employees are updated with the latest trends in the industry. If you have taken a short course prior to applying to a company, it shows your potential employer that you have the interest and initiative to continuously learn and improve yourself.
2. It will give you a deeper knowledge on your interests.
Let’s say you love fashion. Taking a short course in fashion styling or fashion design will give you a deeper sense of what it is like to be in the fashion industry. You will get firsthand experience and possibly get your foot in the door as well.
3. It will help you build connections.
Since you’re back in school, taking up a short course will help you meet both like-minded individuals and people from different backgrounds. This way, taking up a short course will help you build professional connections and possibly lifelong friendships along the way.
4. It will broaden your horizons.
On vacation from college? Or have you just resigned and want a break before getting a new job? Instead of just spending your time at home, why not try something new, like taking photography classes? It is definitely worth your precious time and will broaden your horizons.
5. It costs less than other programs.
At the School of Fashion and the Arts (SoFA) for example, a Certificate in Fashion Design costs around P49,600. In short, short courses give you quality education and the information that you need to know at a fraction of what it would cost if you got a degree.
6. You get to learn skills–fast.
Short courses can last for a couple of days, a summer, to a whole semester, where you can fast-track your way to a detailed understanding on a particular skill. You won’t have to spend years of your life working for that certificate. You’ll get it way faster without sacrificing the quality of education that you’ll get.
7. It makes you more flexible
So let’s say you’ve graduated from college and already have a bachelor’s degree under your belt. Taking a short course will make you a lot more flexible since you have additional knowledge besides your degree. Thus, you can be assigned to other places outside your field. This equates to more possible opportunities in the near future.
8. It will help you realize whether you really want that career path.
So let’s say this time you’re just testing the waters as to whether that hobby of yours can indeed become your career. Taking a short course will actually give you a taste of what its like to be in the shoes of a professional working that particular career. Only after you’ve experienced it will you be able to answer the question of whether it is something you would like to pursue as a career or as a hobby.
