The “-ber months” are upon us, which means that the holidays season has started. That means Christmas songs have become staples of mall playlists, and it’s only normal to see holiday decorations being displayed in stores. At the same time, we’re expecting heavier traffic and a possible increase in Modus Operandi (MO).
That’s why personal safety should be your top priority, especially when you’re on the go. While your boyfriend or mom may advise you to load up your purse with pepper spray and taser, there are actually things in your bag that you could use as as improvised weapons. Here are 5 everyday items that you could use for self-defense:
1. Ballpen
Your pen isn’t just for writing; it can also be used to make the attacker writhe in pain. Hold it between your index and middle finger as you throw punches, and make sure to hit the attacker in the most vulnerable areas; it wouldn’t do much if you target the chest. Aim for the eyes, ears, or nose.
2. Scarf
More than a fashionable accessory, scarves could also be tools for temporarily disabling your attacker. When the attacker makes a move, block his or her hand with the scarf held like a rope for distraction. Then, you could use the scarf like a rope and wrap it around the attacker’s neck for a chokehold.
3. Shoes
Okay, this one’s not really in bag, but you readily have it on you. High heels aren’t just killer fashion staples but also make for effective self-defense tools. You could use it to hit the attacker’s foot hard, or you can also aim for the knee, as this is also a vulnerable area. If you can, do a front kick against the groin area.
4. Perfume
Perfume could be your improvised pepper spray. Spray it directly to the face, particularly targeting the eyes, to distract the attacker.
5. Bag
The actual bag can be your lifesaver. Tie the strap around the neck and choke the attacker temporarily. Or, you may simply use it to hit the attacker.
Your bag could go beyond as a fashion accessory, as it also contains things you can use for self-defense. Go ahead; open it and see the objects as improvised weapons.
