Happy New Year, Modern Filipinas!
Have you made your New Year’s resolutions yet? Apart from losing weight and traveling more this year, what else should be on the list? In case “look for a job” is part of your New Year’s resolutions, here are the qualities you have to embody to get hired:
1. Leadership Ability
If you can lead, the company can count on you.
In job interviews, always show that you are a leader. Discuss your past leadership accomplishments or explain how you took initiative when it comes to challenges in school or your previous work. You can also display leadership by speaking calmly and confidently. Think of Pia Wurtzbach and the way she answered that difficult Ms. Universe question. Be confidently beautiful!
2. Competence
It is important to show the interviewer the skills set that will make them believe you can get the job done. Here’s a tip: use the STAR (Situation-Task-Action-Result) method when answering the questions. (S) Give a background for context, (T) explain the tasks given to you, (A) discuss how you used your skills in that situation and (R) tell the details of the result.
3. Integrity
The first thing you can do to display integrity in a job interview is to show up on time! Throw away that Filipino time mentality and “Traffic sa EDSA” excuse because arriving on time in an interview is a great sign that you’re respectful and trustworthy. Also resist the urge to bash your previous employer or boss, even if you had bad experiences in your former company.
4. Intelligence
It’s not necessary to be a genius or a cum laude to get hired. Just show you have the ability to plan, organize, solve problems, set priorities, and get the job done.
5. Likability
Employers like people who are friendly, warm, and cooperative. Be friendly and kind to the security guard, receptionist, and whomever else you encounter inside the office. Sometimes, companies ask these people to have a sense of how you act without the rehearsed professionalism. You can also show that you’re likeable by engaging in small talks and building rapport with your interviewer. They are not just looking at your qualifications; they are also gauging if your personality will fit the culture of the company.
Going to a job interview is like having a first date; you wouldn’t want it to be awkward and nightmarish. So, if you want to nail a job interview, remember that the qualities stated above can land you that dream job.
