A writer and lyricist with dreams taller than herself.
Chinese immigrants have been in the Philippines as long as the Spanish have been. Hundreds of years later, Chinese traditions have seamlessly blended into our culture. So whenever Chinese New Year comes along, we get almost as excited as we do for Christmas. We buy lucky charms for the house and office tables, we give away red envelopes of money, and we check our annual Feng Shui.
This 2019, we’re celebrating the Year of the Golden Pig. One way we can celebrate, according to Feng Shui, is to wear red, gold, and pink. Now, there isn’t anything wrong with following this advice — especially since the colors are quite close to Pantone’s Color of 2019, Living Coral.
Another way to celebrate the Year of the Golden Pig, I believe, is to keep our skin glowing throughout the year. It’s so easy to just wipe off our makeup with cleansing wipes and then head straight to bed. As tempting as this idea is, especially after a rough day, it won’t give us that beautiful golden glow.
Here are some tips to get that golden glow we yearn for:
Use a Toner Every Day
Some people don’t believe in the power of toners but that might be because they haven’t found the right one yet — or maybe they haven’t found the right one for their skin type. If you want to rehydrate your skin and protect it from environmental radicals, for example, you have to go for a toner that contains Vitamin A, C, and E.
Always Wear Sunscreen
Being from the tropics, we’re used to glaring sunlight in February even when the rest of the world is shivering because of a snowstorm. But this does not mean that we are immune to sun damage. We need to wear sunscreen regardless of the weather because it protects our skin from UVA and UVB rays that accelerate skin aging and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Don’t Be Afraid to Exfoliate
Many friends, cousins, and titas have shared with me the reason they are hesitant to exfoliate their skin. Some of them think it will further damage their sensitive skin, while others think it will make their skin thinner. But we need to exfoliate regularly so we can stimulate cellular growth, get rid of dead skin cells, and reveal the smooth skin underneath.
Moisturize Regardless of Your Skin Type
For the longest time, I was under the assumption that I don’t need a moisturizer because I have oily skin. But my dermatologist explained to me that the lack of moisture is a common cause of oiliness — the skin is overcompensating for what it lacks, I guess. I’ve learned my lesson and I’m sharing it with you: always use a moisturizer to regulate the natural oils that nourish and condition your skin.
Keep these skincare tips in mind, and your skin will be golden and glowing throughout the year!
